ABC... Nevermind

As the winter season moves in on North Texas, the art scene in Denton is only heating up. I visited one of my favorite local galleries yesterday (on a rare Denton tour alone - running errands and keeping appointments). I try to step into UNT on the Square gallery whenever I can. I was super bummed to have missed the recent fiber arts collective that was there last month. The fibers exhibition from last year was just plain stunning - chalk full of inspiration!

Moving on!

The gallery’s latest opus is Harmonic Dissonance: a mixed media, interactive sculpture exhibit, with work from the University of North Texas UNT College of Visual Arts + Design Sculpture Collective of UNT. Many may already know that University of North Texas is internationally famed for its arts program.

If any readers are in the north DFW area, please plan to make a trip to this little gem in old town.

The exhibits opens with a comical take on reciting the ABC’s. The majority of the sculpture in the collection have a kinetic, musical or visual interactive aspect.

The entire collection seems to emulate a sense of auditory exercise - either by actual sound produced by the interaction by the viewer or by the appearance of a sound effect. Such as a hollowed wooden box or a bundle of brush and twigs - which could represent the sound of rustling fall winds.

While some of the pieces embody the essence of sound, such as a rope light and reel to reel’s to represent a musical recording, others offer a strictly visual feast. Monitors and lights covered with natural material certainly offer an extraordinary view of artistic representation.

The art of assemblage and artistic placement of found objects is brilliantly executed in this exhibit. It really offers much inspiration on what exactly can be done with a pile of wood, jingle bells, and various garden tools; not to mention copious amounts of string, bits of metal, paper and a burnt piece of toast (no really, I’m serious).

Please make time to visit this gallery; you will not be disappointed.
